You see in this fine old Zuni necklace the exceptional skill of a native silversmith. Very rare, these beautiful chunky bears speak for themselves, all finely hand carved, each with eyes looking forward in their curious faces. They came from a mid-20th century collection and eventually to me, and in that passage much of the provenance has been lost, but I believe they are carved in white bone and each has a tiny bit of difference from the others. The largest bear is 25mm in length and about 18mm high The hollow sterling silver beads seem to echo the chunky forms of the bears, making it light in wearable weight and the rest of this wonderful old 24” necklace is made with old trade beads and bone beads.
